President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has delegated Second Vice-President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana to represent him at this year's Umthetho Cultural Festival, set to bring vibrant celebration to the foot of Hora Mountain in Mzimba District this Saturday, 8 August.
The annual festival, held under the leadership of His Majesty Inkosi ya Makhosi M'mbelwa V, is one of the biggest cultural showcases on Malawi's calendar, celebrating the rich heritage of the Ngoni people through colourful traditional dances such as the Ingoma, alongside indigenous cuisine, beverages and centuries-old customs.
The festival serves as a vibrant reminder of the Ngoni people's history and social values, drawing crowds from across the region eager to witness the spectacle of tradition brought vividly to life.
Beyond the celebrations, this year's event will also spotlight progress made at the Hora Heritage Centre, a cultural and development hub established by the Ngoni community of Mzimba to drive heritage preservation, boost tourism, and support community-led development initiatives.
The 2026 edition of Umthetho is being held under the theme "Mzimba United for Land Preservation and Sustainable Development," placing sharp focus on tackling environmental degradation and promoting sustainable land management, as the district grapples with mounting population pressures and rising demand for land.
Chihana's appearance on behalf of the President underscores the significance government continues to attach to the festival, as authorities look to balance the celebration of Malawi's diverse cultural heritage with pressing conversations around land use and environmental sustainability heading into the future.
