Former Malawi Defence Force commander General Paul Valentino Phiri has been granted bail after a dramatic court appearance, following his shock arrest on corruption charges linked to an alleged illegal arms trafficking scandal.
Senior resident magistrate Shukurani Kumbani set bail at a hefty K10 million cash bond, backed by two sureties bonded at K20 million each — a striking sum reflecting the seriousness of the charges against the once-powerful military chief.
As part of his strict bail conditions, the disgraced former commander has also been ordered to report to police once every month until his trial, which is now scheduled to begin on 12 November 2026.
Phiri's dramatic court appearance came just a day after Anti-Corruption Bureau investigators swooped to arrest him on five separate counts, with the ACB confirming the charges relate to abuse of office and dealing in terrorist property.
Speaking after the bail hearing, Phiri's lawyer Powell Nkhutabasa revealed the full scale of the allegations facing his client, disclosing that the charges also extend to breaches of procurement procedures.
"The General was informed of the reasons why he had been detained. After that, we made an application for bail, and the court has since released him on bail," Nkhutabasa said.
In a bombshell development, the ACB alleges the charges stem from Phiri's role in facilitating illegal arms trafficking back in June and July 2025 — raising fresh and troubling questions over security lapses at the very top of Malawi's military establishment.
It comes after Phiri was forced to spend Thursday night behind bars in police custody, after his original court appearance was abruptly postponed at the eleventh hour — a last-minute switch that left both his legal team and onlookers scrambling for answers at the time.
